Sometimes you need a good old-fashioned diner-style breakfast. You know the kind… Eggs, hash browns, bacon and a side of toast or maybe even pancakes. But without the bad coffee and greasy spoon. This morning was one of those times, and S & W Country Diner in Culver City was the place.
We drive past here on weekends and see long lines of people waiting to eat. On this particular Sunday, we vowed to get their early. We arrived a few minutes before they opened at 8am, and were first to enter.
The place is cozy, with a few two-tops on the sidewalk out front, a small counter area and two rooms with booths and tables. We chose a booth by the window, near the kitchen. We were promptly brought ice water followed by two coffees — one regular and a decaf.
The menus looked like they had been through a battle. Very worn, but the contents were impressive. A long list of traditional breakfast options and very reasonable prices.
Joan opted for two egg over easy with cottage cheese and sourdough toast. I ordered two eggs, also over easy, but with hash browns, bacon and toast.
The hash browns were perfect. Crunchy on the outside, soft inside and not greasy. The eggs were cooked perfectly as well. The toast was a little cold, but you can’t win’em all.
The coffee was a treat. They serve Diedrich’s, and it rivaled the coffee of neighboring Starbucks. Certainly better than what you usually get a diner — by a long shot. Well done.
We left feeling very full, but content. We don’t often eat like that, but if we’re looking for that traditional diner fare, this place will be one of the first I think of.
