Jacobi’s On The Alley

September 28, 2010 By Joan Hester 5 Comments

Everybody’s been talking about Jacobi’s. I’m sure you’ve heard about it, the new burger place downtown. Last Saturday we decided to try it and I have to say, it lived up to its reputation. The decor is simple but hip. The food is great. I also liked the protocol for ordering. You write down what you want, walk it to the counter and voila, all done. Very efficient.

We started with the Ahi appetizer – so good. Fresh with a little bit of spice. I had the lamb chops. They weren’t as delicious as the lamb chops at The Shore, but they were very good. I particularly liked the minted rosemary sauce. Jeff had the One Spicy Burger and loved it. To me, what makes a great burger is the ratio of meat to bun to condiments. Too much bun and it’s dry. Too many condiments, too mushy. You get the picture. Well let me tell you, the proportions on this burger were perfect. Every bite melted in your mouth (yes, I got a few bites.) For dessert we shared the berry cobbler. It was good, though it could have been sweeter for my tastes.

I highly recommend Jacobi’s. Everything you’ve heard is true!

About Joan Hester

During weekdays, I am Director of Admission at an independent school in Los Angeles. On the weekends, I like to explore LA with Jeff. I've thru-hiked the John Muir Trail, summited all the tallest peaks in Southern California, and I'm searching for the perfect, fat-free, calorie-free chocolate croissant.

I read somewhere (Yelp, I think) that you could not only bring wine but also beer, but when I tried this recently, I was told “it was against the law” for them to allow people to bring their own beer. Seriously? It’s okay to bring wine, but not okay to bring beer?

Sounds suspect to me. Any legal eagles who know the truth?

This is a funky little place. It really is on the alley, and you have to go off the beaten path to find it. The outside doesn’t look like much (your picture pretty much says it all) but the inside is hip.

Not sure I like the whole “write-up your own order” thing, but the food was great.

I agree, Michael. I don’t care for the “write your own order” thing as well. Since I wrote the review I’ve been there twice. One time I walked out before I ordered because the waiters were so rude. The last time I was there I had a good experience and a great burger. It’s somewhat inconsistent but I’ve had two good meals at Jacobi’s.

Bad news (for Jacobi’s, anyway). I was riding my bike by there yesterday and saw an eviction notice on the door. I peeked inside and saw they have closed down (no tables, chairs, etc.).

Honestly, their location was not the greatest.

    Interesting! I can’t say I’m that suprised. You’re right, it wasn’t a great location.
