April 6, 2011 By Joan Hester Leave a Comment

  • What:  The Vagina Monologues
  • When:  Friday, April 8 at 7:00 pm and Saturday, April 9 at 2:00 and 7:00 pm
  • Where:  Knuckleheads
  • How:  Order tickets ($15) through Eventbrite or buy them at the door

This weekend I am going to stand on the stage at Knuckleheads and talk about vaginas. Wow, never thought I’d say that! However, it’s true. Last November I was in Starbucks and saw a poster asking people to volunteer to work on V Day San Clemente by helping to produce a production of “The Vagina Monologues”. It was for a good cause, Laura’s House.

I heard about “The Vagina Monologues” when it was first performed in New York. I was living there at the time and wanted to see it but never got a chance. Now, many years later, in my beloved little town of San Clemente, there was going to be a production. I knew I had to do it. So I contacted Laura Lee and the rest is history.

It’s been a great process. I had never read they piece. When I did, I found it to be poignant, funny and quite powerful. I was cast in the opening monologue and given several introductions to read. We rehearsed Saturday nights. There’s something sweet about a bunch of women getting together every Saturday night to talk about vaginas. We would always have wine, beer and many snacks. With each rehearsal I was remined what vulnerable, vibrant and powerful beings we women are. It’s been a grounding experience.

I hope you join us. It promises to be a fun and thought provoking experience.

About Joan Hester

During weekdays, I am Director of Admission at an independent school in Los Angeles. On the weekends, I like to explore LA with Jeff. I've thru-hiked the John Muir Trail, summited all the tallest peaks in Southern California, and I'm searching for the perfect, fat-free, calorie-free chocolate croissant.
